“Rex“ is the adorably scary pinnacle of Brent’s technical journey with realism and the Single Stuffed Animal series. The original oil painting has the Most amount of time devoted to its creation in the series!!!

Intense depth of field for a More reach-out-and-grab-it feel!!!

The challenging and time consuming techniques Brent used to paint “Rex” are all done with the intention of enhancing the depth of field at the pinnacle of his realism phase. From the out of focus tail contrasting with the thickly painted white claws, the more depth that is painted, the more alive it feels in person! :)

The rhythmic contrast in the brushstrokes themselves is what creates a powerful visible depth of field… light, feathery brushstrokes in the tail, to the bold, very intentional brushstrokes runny vertically over the tail. This contrast in brushstrokes is a continuing theme in “Rex” and incorporates Brent’s most technical artistic skill.

Brent painted “Rex” at the height of his use of the Velvet Technique, which can be seen throughout the painting, from the the red tongue, the orange belly, the feet, and even his teeth! Although all these areas use the same technique, each area is meant to Feel different… a little different tempo/dance of brushstrokes.

“Rex, at the time he was created in 2017, was a mystery to me. However, i came to realize that he was the artistically-and-technically-scary/difficult-to-create Dinosaur that was the leader of all the other Dinosaurs i would go on to create! Like a Spielberg movie, Rex, i hope, embodies all the fun emotions… intrigue, cuteness, scariness, fun, happiness,… :) Also, that photo was taken 6 years ago!!!… my Skull shirt era ;)”
