Inspired by Gardens, Influenced by Nature

“Sky, Ocean, Beach, Garden” was painted on 19th and The Strand. Looking north out towards Malibu, this painting was inspired by the rose garden over looking the beach… however, I “planted” a few more flowers and removed a few clouds from the sky ;)

My Impressions series was inspired for my love of the great Impressionist (Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse…) and this painting was inspired for my love and desire to paint flowers. The dominating subject of this painting is the bountiful rose garden in the foreground however, as I began to create this painting, and all future paintings, I realized that all elements within my art deserve the same intention. The title of this piece was chosen because I wanted to highlight the importance of each element within the painting.

Sky, Ocean, Beach, Garden

As mentioned in previous Stories, I create from back to front and thus the first element of this painting to be created was the sky. The movement and brushstrokes of the sky was directly inspired from one of my favorite paintings, Vincent Van Gogh’s 1889, “Wheat Field with Cypressess”

Vincent Van Gogh’s 1889 “Wheat Field with Cypresses”

Inspired Sky

The 1st brushstroke of the sky that set the rhythm/tempo of the entire painting

One of the stars of this painting is the Very abundant rose garden in the foreground. A favorite artistic quote of mine is from the great Impressionist Henri Matisses

"There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted" - Henri Matisse

Each rose I painted/planted was no more than 1 or 2 quick impasto (thick) brushstrokes… letting the “organicness” of the present moment create these roses… each entirely unique and full of life.

Fun side note… these flowers were gifted to my wife, Tara, from our good friends and Collectors, Dan and Lolo, for match-making them together.

This painting is one of the first Impressions with a very intentional focus on the pure beauty of Nature… the sky, the ocean, the beach, and gardens :)
