This One’s Me, 2022
oil on canvas
24”x 18” (61cm x 46 cm)
This one’s me depicts a sweetly-smiling bunny, dressed in a neck-bow and sitting neatly in a small bright spotlight. Adorably innocent, it is also a sensationally bold and energetic piece, boasting strong minimal brushwork and dramatic palette of glowing turquoise, vivid purple, and details of rich orange and green. The bunny, too, is far from timid, playfully sticking out its small tongue at the viewer from an upside-down smile.
The color combination itself is a rare one for me, as essentially every pigment I used is bold enough to be the star of its own painting. And yet here, the high intensity of the individual colors harmonized wonderfully to arrest and hold the viewer’s attention. There is a nice pace of line I was able to achieve throughout the piece that allowed each stroke of paint to boast its own beauty while simultaneously serving its purpose in the overall form of the bunny.
The title of the piece is an ode to my wonderful fiancée Tara who is an avid fan of all animals, and will oftentimes particularly identify with pictures of bunnies. When I completed this painting, she chimed in with “This one’s me! ” and thus it instantly became the perfect title.
